European Motorcycle Tour

Day 1 of the European Motorcycle Tour

As we leave the bustling city of Tbilisi behind us on an European motorcycle tour, we are immersed in the breathtaking natural beauty of rural backroads. The fresh air and tranquil surroundings offer us a welcome respite from city life’s stresses. We prepare at the garage ready to embark on an exciting journey filled with thrills and breathtaking landscapes.

As our engines rev up, we begin navigating the winding serpentines that take us deeper into the mountains. The ever-changing views leave us in awe and remind us of how vast this world truly is. We embark on an extraordinary journey through quiet roads and winding asphalt as we make our way towards our next destination.

  1. Distance Covered: 190 KM
  2. Riding hours: 3.5
  3. Average speed: 55 KM/H
  4. Highest point: 1200 M

Our journey takes us to Vardzia, a magnificent monastery city built into a massive rock face. In times of war, this historical site served as a secret hideout; after an earthquake in the 11th century, hundreds of cave houses were left behind where monks used to reside. As we explore this unique piece of history together, we are transported back in time and immersed in its vibrant cultural heritage.

After our exciting exploration, we depart for our guesthouse a mere five-minute ride away. This establishment is an ‘Agro Hotel,’ boasting all its food grown onsite. We enjoy an exquisite meal featuring fresh trout from the nearby river while listening to the soothing sound of water flowing throughout the evening – the ideal end to such an exhilarating day!

This region is known as ‘Meskhi,’ and it is considered the cultural birthplace of Georgia. Not only is the area renowned for its breathtaking scenery, but also for its numerous cultural and historic landmarks.

Today we have two exciting options for our journey. The first is an off-road pass from Sairme to Abastumani that provides stunning views of Europe’s largest national park, while the second route follows paved roads through Borjomi. No matter which option we select, our final destination remains Kutaisi.

  1. Distance Covered: 250 KM (asphalt) / 165 KM (with 35 KM offroad)
  2. Riding hours: 5 / 5

As we travel through this region, we are met by winding roads that weave around rivers, cliffs and castles. The scenery is truly a sight for sore eyes – lush forests, rolling hills and towering mountains create a picturesque backdrop to our journey. This melting pot of ethnicities and religions has coexisted peacefully for centuries in harmony, creating an impressive cultural heritage which continues to be celebrated today.

As we journey through Meskhi, we come across numerous historical and cultural landmarks that showcase the region’s vibrant past. From ancient ruins to medieval castles, there is something captivating around every corner. Meskhi’s architecture combines traditional Georgian styles with influences from neighboring cultures, creating an eye-catching blend that is both visually stunning and culturally significant.

Day 3 of the European Motorcycle Tour

Today, we embark on a journey to Racha on an European motorcycle tour, a mystical region that has yet to be discovered by foreign tourists. This hidden gem is often compared to Switzerland due to its serene calmness and breathtaking mountainous scenery. As we traverse the roads of Racha, we are greeted with a dreamlike experience for any motorcycle enthusiast – winding roads with plenty of mountain passes and very little traffic. Our journey takes us all the way up to Oni, a tranquil mountain village where we will be staying for the night at Temur’s guesthouse.

Temur’s guesthouse is an experience in itself. A true embodiment of Georgian charm, the house is a museum of sorts, showcasing the many talents of its owner. Almost everything you see at the guesthouse is built and made by Temur himself. The decorations include skinned bear and wolf skins that add a rustic feel to the beautiful abode.

  1. Distance Covered: 150 KM + afternoon gravel rides as mentioned above
  2. Riding hours: 3 – 4.5
  3. Average speed: 50 KM/H

Temur’s wife is an excellent cook and will prepare the most delicious specialties from Racha for us to savor. Their son Nika takes us around the house, where we can witness firsthand the family’s self-sustaining lifestyle. We get to eat freshly smoked meat, distill our own chacha, and bake our own bread in a traditional Georgian ‘tone.’

For riders who can’t get enough of riding, Racha offers plenty of gravel roads leading up to some stunning viewpoints overlooking the high Caucasus. Racha’s majestic mountains and lush greenery stretch as far as the eye can see – it is truly a place of untouched natural splendor that will surely take your breath away.
